This table’s London Plane heartwood is rich with mystery and promise. Each piece is selected carefully, then hand-sanded and oiled. The tapered, solid wood legs add a graceful touch to the modernist sensibility. Of course one of my bedside tables had to be named for Aphra Behn, the libertine author.
This English writer and poet was one of the most influential playwrights of the late seventeenth century, writing ‘scandalous’ plays and novels and an explicitly lesbian poem. She was also an enigma, going by the names Ann Behn, Mrs Bean, agent 160 and Astrea. In fact, she worked abroad as a political spy for Charles II. I think her life would make a great book – or film!
