This bedside table is reaching for the stars, like its namesake, Caroline Herschel, an astronomer who discovered her first comet in 1786. She combined her awe of nature with a rational mind. Just as you can admire this table’s architectural lines and the organic patterns in the solid Ash heartwood, lovingly sanded and oiled by hand. The solid wood legs are beautifully tapered.
I love imagining Caroline looking into her telescope on frosty nights, staring at the stars with awe, but also with a scientist’s mind, recording and analysing. She was the first woman to be awarded a Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and there’s even a crater on the moon named for her. She was awarded Prussia’s Gold Medal for Science on her 96th birthday – what an inspiration.
