Get sustainably sourced sophistication with these handcrafted wood shelves. They’re made from solid Pippy Oak heartwood recovered from the HS2 construction, with industrial-chic steel supports. The shelves are named for Frances Burney, a satirical novelist and playwright whose work is being seen in a new light.
Frances published her first novel anonymously in 1778, without her father’s knowledge or permission. She penned four novels, eight plays, one biography and 25 volumes of journals and letters. Her writing satirises the social pretensions of English aristocrats, and examines the plight of women in the patriarchal culture. Critics are returning to her work with renewed interest. Unfortunately, her father told her that publishing or performing her dramatic comedies was inappropriate ‘for a lady’. Jane Austen enjoyed her books, and the title of Pride and Prejudice comes from Burney’s Cecilia.
