This towering console table is a natural showplace for your favourite treasures. Perhaps a copy of Middlemarch(often voted the best English novel of all time) as the table is named for Mary Ann Evans, aka George Eliot. The mellow Pippy Oak heartwood is hand-sanded and oiled to reveal the interesting depths of its unique wood grain pattern. The strong legs are made from solid wood, elegantly tapered.
Mary Ann chose George Eliot as her nom-de-plume, so people would judge her books objectively. Her brave writing reveals deep psychological insights into her characters’ passions and foibles, and examines the place of women in the patriarchal society of the 19th century.
Mary Ann was also brave in her personal life. She lived with (the married) George Henry Lewes, even though friends and family shunned her. After his death, she married a man 20 years her junior, also scandalous at that time.
