I’ve named this elegant console table for Mary Seacole, an inspiring champion of human rights. The high table has clean lines, to fit in beautifully with any style of décor. Each piece is handcrafted from an Ash tree cut to make way for HS2. The beauty lives on – deep in the hand-sanded heartwood grain, you’ll see the story of the individual tree. The solid wood legs are elegantly tapered for the perfect finishing touch.
Mary was born in Jamaica in 1805, as a ‘free person’, to a Jamaican woman and a Scottish Lieutenant in the British Army. As a child, she ‘practised’ medicine on her doll and herself, then grew up to become a nurse. Mary cared for soldiers during the Crimean war, and travelled to many countries, such as The Bahamas, Haiti, Turkey and Cuba. She was also an entrepreneur who was committed to tackling social problems and racial inequality. Her autobiography, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands (1857), is one of the earliest autobiographies of a mixed-race woman.
